The Timberville Fire Department was formed in
1948 and has provided more that 60 years of continuous volunteer
service. We are the only true volunteer Fire Company in Rockingham
County providing service for this length of time. The employers in our
area who allow the firefighters to respond to emergencies have made this
accomplishment possible. The department provides emergency
services to over 55 square miles and a approximite population of
5500 people.
The Fire Department serves the Town of
Timberville and surrounding Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties. There
are 35 active members including 12 life members each serving more than 25
years. The Fire Department has been assisting the squad with First
Responder service for 16 years and is certified by the State of Virginia
to provide this service. The Department also works closely with the
Broadway Volunteer Fire Department and New Market Volunteer Fire Department on emergency calls and training. A
response to a structure fire, as well as other types of fire calls, will
involve either or both departments to ensure adequate manpower and equipment to
control the situation.
The fire station houses 2 fire engines, 2 1500
gallon tankers, a 4 wheel drive brush truck, a first responder
vehicle and a utility van. The station also has offices, a training
room, lounge and kitchen. The Department also conducts an annual lawn party on Hollar
Circle usually in the first full week of June, which is the major fund raising activity. Chicken and beef
barbecues throughout the rest of the year are other fund raising activities.
During Fire Prevention Month in October, the department mails letters to
the citizens in our service area requesting donations. These donations,
along with fund raising and funding from Rockingham County, the Town of
Timberville and the State of Virginia, provide the necessary income for
operating and updating equipment and supplies.
